She was one of 14 stray cats pulled from the streets of Paris by French researchers at CERMA. They gave her a number — C 341 — not a name, to avoid attachment. But the cosmos had other plans.
Strapped into a Véronique rocket in the Algerian Sahara, she launched 154 km above Earth. Thirteen minutes later, she returned — the first and only cat to survive a spaceflight.
She endured 9.5 g-forces — double what Apollo astronauts would later face. Five minutes of weightlessness above the atmosphere. Electrodes in her brain transmitted data back to Earth. She never flinched.
